Using the right air filters and maintaining them properly is very important to your home’s HVAC system. Air filters play a major role in keeping your air free of pollutants and your system working efficiently. If filters aren’t maintained properly, you could be looking at allergens spread throughout your home as well as a rising electricity bill, keep reading our guide to Air Filters in Las Vegas.
How Do I Know if my Filter is Efficient?
The HVAC industry has a standard rating called MERV (maximum efficiency reporting value), that lets home owners know how just how effective air filters are in cleaning air. Many filters have a MERV rating on the package, which states the size of particles which a filter can capture.
Higher MERV ratings mean that smaller particles can be captured by the filter. Particle sizes are measured in microns. Pollen can be anywhere from 10-100 microns, dust ranges from .5 to 5 microns, and smoke is .3 microns. To put some perspective on these particles, you could compare human hair size which is 60-75 microns wide.
So Which Air Filter is Best Then?
A-TECH Heating and Cooling recommends MERV 11 filters, which are the most efficient filters for homes. Although we recommend this filter in general, it may not always be the best solution for your needs. If you want to learn more about your HVAC system and the filters it needs, or have any questions, then you can call us today. We will look at your home’s needs, HVAC system, and take other factors into account before finding the best solution for your unique needs.
A MERV 11 filter will filter more than 95% of particles between 1.0 and 3.0 microns. This makes it really efficient in stopping mold, spores, flour, humidifier dust and other small particles. A MERV 11 filter will also stop bigger particles such as pollen and carpet/textile dust.
Should I Ever Use the Highest MERV Filter Available?
If your filter is designed to remove really small particles, then it’s also going to be really dense. This density of the filter is going to stop a lot of the HVAC’s air flow, which could lead to other complications such as complete system failure.
The best filter available is always the one that will work the most efficiently with your HVAC system as well as stop the smallest particles (without ruining the efficiency of the overall system). Because of the importance of air filters in the home, as well as on the efficiency of HVAC systems, we recommend that you give us a call before purchasing any new air filters that may not serve your needs.
Do Efficient Air Filters Help me Save Money?
Yes, efficient air filters will help you save money. If your filter is exactly what your HVAC system needs, then it’s less likely to break and need a costly repair or replacement.
Efficient air filters will also let more air pass through them, without the HVAC system having to overwork itself and use more electricity.
However, the balance between air filter prices, maintenance and electricity savings is very hard to achieve. Our decades of experience with HVAC systems will allow us to find that balance, so that you don’t have to waste money and time trying to find it yourself.
How Long Will Filters Last?
This really depends on your house and environment. Some filters need to be replaced every three months, while others can be replaced once or twice a year. A-Tech recommends changing you filter once per month during active use.
If you have pets for example, or you live near a construction zone, you can expect to change your filter many more times than you would need to in a lake house for example.
Should I Change my Filter Even when it looks Clean?
Your filter shouldn’t look clean after 1-3 months of it being installed. Filters will look ashy and visibly dirty after a couple of weeks.
If dust isn’t building up on your filter, then that means it’s not installed correctly. You will need to check if the filter fits into the holder, if it’s lose, or if there’s any leaks around the filter. If leaks are present, that means that the dust goes straight through them without being stopped by the filter first. This isn’t good.
Once you identify the problem, make sure you fix it. If you can’t find the issue, and your filter continues not to build up dust, then should call A-TECH Heating and Cooling.
