Thermostats aren’t often a big concern with homeowners or HVAC specialists. They are overlooked because they don’t seem important. What most people don’t know about thermostats is that they play a big role in keeping your home not only comfortable, but also energy efficient. They are more important than meets the eyes.
If your thermostat isn’t optimized for your system and setup correctly, it could ruin the efficiency of your unit. What’s the point of spending a lot of time and money in finding the perfect unit, if it’s not used to its potential with the right thermostat? It might actually undo all of the efficiency you put into your system using other solutions.
What is a Thermostat?
A thermostat is used to measure the temperature of a home and building, and then to activate the HVAC system accordingly. Older thermostats may not work efficiently with newer HVAC systems that have a plethora of new features.
There are many new thermostats on the market that can be programmed. What’s the point in that you might ask? Well let’s say you like keeping your house at 72 degrees year wide. Is it really necessary for the A/C or heating system to work non-stop, even when you’re not home?
Let’s say you leave for work at eight o’clock. You can program your thermostat to let the temperature get up to 78 degrees after eight. Then if you usually get home at five o’clock, you can tell it to start cooling your house at say 3:30PM. By the time you get home, its 72 degrees again. You’re happy and comfortable, and so is your wallet. Because using this advanced thermostat setup, you saved money on cooling the house while you were away at work.
