Zoning Control Systems
Zoning control systems are extremely effective in helping home owners increase temperature comfort while also lowering energy bills. These systems utilize a zone control panel, individual area thermostats, and motorized dampers to fine-tune a home’s HVAC results.
Homes that have more than one story will often have a temperature difference between levels ranging from 2 to 10 degrees. Furthermore, homes that have just one level but are large will also have a temperature difference between the end closest to the HVAC system and the opposite end.
The best time to install a zoning control system is when a house is being built, and our team at A Tech Heating and Cooling installs mini-split systems for garages or problem areas in homes.
How Does a Zoning Control System Work?
With multiple thermostats across a home, a zoning control system can determine which zones need to have their air dampers open or closed. The lower level of a home for example might have its air dampers closed for half of the time that the AC runs, while the air dampers of the top floor might remain open the entire time.
With a zoning control system, the heating or cooling systems themselves will run until all areas of the home have reached the homeostasis desired. However, home owners can also set different zones to different temperatures if they desire.
Since air flow is controlled as necessary across the home with a zoning system, the HVAC equipment itself runs less and saves energy. One of the more interesting features of a zoning system is that it can be setup to not heat or cool kitchens, living rooms, and other areas of a home during the night. Such programming directs air flow to the bedrooms where the cooling and heating priority is, and uses extremely less energy by omitting the rooms that do not need to be conditioned as much during the night when no one is using them.
